What To Do In St Thomas – Us Virgin Islands?

Spending the day in St. Thomas? There is lots to see and do, so best to plan accordingly. St. Thomas surprised me with its sweeping hillsides, world class beaches and picturesque scenery.  The island of St. Thomas is the most commercialised of all the US Virgin Islands. St. John and St. Criox are the other islands that make up the US Virgin Islands, they can be accessed via boat or ferry from St. Thomas.

After spending the day in St. Thomas here is my guide for your visit to St. Thomas.

Wander the streets

Explore Charlotte Amalie, taking advantage of the tax free shopping. Take a drive around the island and take in some of the incredible views back towards the town of Charlotte Amalie (pictured below).

Visit Drake’s Seat

Continue your car tour around to Drake’s Seat where explorer Sir Francis Drake would watch for incoming ships, you can see why this made a great vantage point for watching for pirates. Take in the views of Magens Bay and the outlying islands.

Check out the beaches

The top three beaches in St. Thomas are Magens Bay, Hull Bay and Brewer’s Bay. Magens Bay has been rated one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world (see below). Admission is about $5. Hull Bay is just west of Magen’s Bay is a popular surf location and Brewer’s Bay is located close to the airport.

Snorkel and Swim at Magens Bay

Bring your snorkel and head towards the far western end of Magens Bay for some snorkelling. Its not world class but you will see lots of local fish and definitely a fun little activity for an hour or so.

For longer stays or even a full day trip

Ferries run between St. Thomas and St. John every hour. The trip is approximately 20 minutes. Head to St. John for hiking, snorkelling and diving.

Tips:

Visit Magens Bay

It’s well worth it! But the beaches can get crowded. Head down to the end of the beach for a bit of isolation.

Taxis

Taxis are priced per person regardless of how many people are in the car. The going rate were $7 per person in 2014.

St. Johns or St. Thomas

Decide early if you will be making the journey to St. Johns. Allow plenty of time to get back to St. Thomas should you be in town on a cruise ship for the day.
