You’ve got 3 days in Barcelona, Spain? Barcelona would be on top of the places to see in Spain for its diversity and ability to appeal to the lovers of fine food and wine, architecture, art, culture, shopping, sunshine and beaches and lots that love to party. Barcelona really does have something for everyone.

Made up of two parts, Barcelona features Placea Catalunya, the historic centre of Barcelona and the modern centre of Barcelona. Enjoy strolling the city for hours passing

Here is my guide for 3 days in Barcelona.

Walk through Las Ramblas, the pedestrian boulevard filled with buskers, vendors and kiosks. My favourite part of Las Ramblas is the mass of fresh flowers on sale.

While walking along Las Ramblas stop by Merat de la Boqueria for the fresh food market. Stock up on nuts and fruit for your journey.

One of my favourite things about Barcelona is that it offers a good mix of culture, food, shopping and beach time. Soak up some rays at the local beaches surrounding the city.

The gothic cathedral was built on the ruins of a Catholic Church. When I visited it was undergoing renovations.

The Museu Picasso contains over 3000 pieces of Picasso’s works.

Take some time to wander through the Olympic Village and Olympic Port along the waterfront area. Enjoy the many restaurants and bars.

Casa Batllo

Take it all in strolling through the streets of Barcelona. Then make your way out to Guell Park to see the urban landscape designed by Gaudi.

Visit the local markets and buy nuts and fruit to snack on.

Book accommodation in advance – I arrived in Barcelona on South East Asian time, thinking I could turn up and just ‘wing-it’ when it came to accommodation. I couldn’t have been more wrong. We were told there was no tourist high season, Barcelona is always busy. Moral of the story, be organised when it comes to Barcelona.

Visit Guell Park – Just outside the city but well worth the trip. Take the bus to Guell Park, another of Gaudi’s works to admire the stonework, gardens, Gaudi’s colourful architecture and take in the beautiful views over the city. Read more on Beautiful Barcelona and Gorgeous Gaudi Architecture.

Be alert – like anywhere we aware of your surroundings and be a smart tourist. Barcelona does have some theft warnings so remember to keep your valuables close.

Looking for things to do in Granada? It’s one photogenic city. Nestled on the banks of the Lago de Nicaragua, Granada’s warm climate and population will leave you smiling and sweaty. I only had half a day to explore the beauty of Granada and while it was enough, you could certainly spend a great deal more time getting lost and found in amongst this historical city. It’s not hard to see why Granada is the city favourite of Nicaragua with its high sense of charm.

Spend a day or spend a week, you will fall in love with Granada. The City of Granada is on the UNESCO World Heritage’s tentative list for both natural and cultural features.

After an incident with theft, two local boys and an ipad in Leon, I decided it best to leave my SLR camera in the hotel for the day and stick to my iphone. Unfortunately these photos are no where near as beautiful as what my SLR would have captured but you’ll just have to let your imagination take you there.

Admire the architecture

You will wander the streets of Granada, admiring the architecture, most of which are churches. The Iglesia de la Merced is one church you can climb to the bell tower and look out over the city. It’s a very minimal cost.

A few other stand outs include:

Capilla del Sagrado Corazon

Convento y Museo San Francisco

Cathedral of Granada

Lake Nicaragua

Wander around Lake Nicaragua or even better hire a kayak and go for a paddle.

Doors of Granada

It might sound silly, but along with the incredible architecture there’s some beautiful features like doors scattered across the city. I took the morning to appreciate every little detail with a series of photos.

Street art

The street art or graffiti of Granada is also photo-worthy.

Getting there and away

From Granada there are many direct links to other Nicaraguan destinations, such as:

  • Leon – Explore the city of Leon and volcano board down Cerro Negro. The journey is approximately a 2 hour drive by shuttle.
  • Managua – The capital of Nicaragua is but an hour away by bus.
  • San Juan del Sur – To visit the beautiful surf town of San Juan del Sur, take a shuttle two hours.
  • Ometempe – To view the picturesque landscape of Ometempe where two volcanoes sit as an island in the lake of Lago de Nicaragua. Ferries to Ometempe leave from Granada and take approximately two hours.

Tips

Like anywhere in Central America, be smart and do not display valuables.
